News from 8-O

Science: 
We are exploring plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes.  Students did mini experiments with cornstarch and water as well as syrup to see the effects of plate tectonics on the world.  We have been discussing the recent earthquake activity in California and Chile.


Math:
Algebra A/B students will know how to work with Polynomials. Prealgebra will know how to graph slope-intercept form. Algebra A will know how to solve systems of equations. Algebra A/B will be taking Keystones in May.


Academic Literacy:
We are starting a new unit in Academic Literacy--"Integration of Knowledge and Ideas in Informational Texts."  Students will be evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of various media, analyzing what makes an author's argument valid, and completing a cross-text analysis using three different pieces of writing.

Social Studies: 
We are just beginning the Industrial Revolution.  We will start to make our way west and then examine the Jacksonian Era.  We will continue to cover current events through political cartoons.  For the fourth marking period, students will create one of the cartoons each time their group is assigned.

Health:

We are starting our unit on the systems of the body.  Students are investigating the Endocrine System and using their QR scanners to evaluate their answers. This unit will help the students gain a better understanding of how our body systems work together as we also look at interdependencies.

 

 

English:

  • In the last two weeks, we have spent a lot of time on the PSSAs.  We created Wordles using important words we associate with the PSSA:   

  • We also worked on vocabulary, diction (word choice), and colloquialisms, which are words used in a specific region, such as York County, PA:
