News from 8-N

English with Mrs. Mason and Mrs. Dinsmore

Students are just starting the narrative writing unit.  This unit has a great deal of grammar in it.  Some of the grammar skills students will learn in this unit are proper pronoun and antecedent usage, verb moods, active voice and passive voice verbs, and how to form and use participial phrases, infinitives, and gerunds.  We will also review some punctuation skills such as punctuating dialogue and when to use parentheses, dashes, and ellipses.  Students will end the unit by writing a fictional narrative that incorporates many of the grammar and punctuation skills along with the literary elements and literary devices we learned earlier in the year.

Students should also be reading their independent novels. There will be a book report due at the beginning of May.  Finally, please do not forget to check Edline on a weekly basis.  Students’ grades, homework assignments, and long-term assignments can all be found on Edline.

Academic Literacy with Miss Smith

We have been reviewing for the PSSAs for reading and writing.  We will start our next unit, the "Integrations of Knowledge and Ideas in Information Texts" next Monday.

Science with Mr. Resh

Students finished up the portfolio unit on oceans.  We are currently looking at what makes up the earth's layers, and the Theory of Plate Tectonics.  This will lead us to the resulting features of mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

Math with Mr. Mikula

Students in Algebra 1A and Pre-Algebra 2 classes are done with Study Island for the year!  The Algebra A/B classes are done for now, but will re-visit Study Island  to review for the Keystone Exams.

Social Studies with Mrs. Heishman

Students are currently working on Chapter 10 Choice Board projects in Social Studies.  They are happy to have the opportunity to use their personal devices to assist in their learning.  Their projects will be due Monday, April 7th.  In the new marking period we will be learning about the Industrial Revolution, Manifest Destiny and westward migration, the influx of immigrants from Germany and Ireland, the growth of modern cities, the increasing dependence on slave labor in the South, and the causes of the Civil War.  It will be a busy Spring, and time always goes by quickly.  Before we know it we will be approaching the end of this school year.

Health with Mrs. Couch

Students are busy researching an organ for a report they will present to the class in a power point presentation.  This unit will help the students gain a better understanding of how our body systems work together as we also look at interdependencies.
