News from 7-N

Mrs. Ross English
It was great to finally see all the students for a full week! We are finishing up our literary elements concept in class and getting ready to move onto text analysis. We are also spending our time preparing for the upcoming Reading PSSA. Students have a book assignment on the genre assigned to their class due on Wednesday February 26th!

Miss Taylor Science
Now that the snow days are hopefully coming to an end, we are finally able to start getting back into the groove of things.  We finished up forces and motion are currently working our way through Newton’s Laws.  We are looking at a big unit test on forces, motion, and Newton’s Laws at the beginning of March!

Mr. Dansberry Math
It was nice to finally have a full week of school for the first time since before Winter Break!  All of the classes have now completed the unit on Rates, Ratios, and Proportions and are now applying them in our new unit on Percents.  Your child should be able to set up a percent proportion or percent equation to help you with all of your percent needs.  Before the end of the Percent unit, he/she should be able to mentally find an estimated 15% tip for the next time you are out to dinner.  Please encourage your child to complete his/her Study Island assignments by the end of each month!

Mr. Whiteford Social Studies
With our unit on Exploration behind us, we are diving in to the 13 Colonies.  Students are currently learning about Jamestown, a lesson which forces them to decide if the benefits of tobacco as a highly profitable cash crop outweighs the health concerns (which were pointed out by King James as early as 1604).  Following this lesson, we will discuss the other early English colony, Plymouth.  We will look at the harrowing journey the Separatists (a.k.a. the Pilgrims) took to get to the Massachusetts Bay, then compare their colony to the Jamestown colony.  After that, we will look at the 13 Colonies.

Mr. Josuweit - Math
I’m hoping that winter is finally behind us so that we can get back into our routines and stay focused on learning! We have just finished Chapter 6 which deals with ratios, rates, and proportions. We will be starting Chapter 7 which deals with fractions, decimals, and percents. The students will be learning tips and tricks to help them easily convert between the different types of numbers. The PSSA is right around the corner so I will soon start preparing them for that so that they can go in confidently and experience success.

So this is what it feels like to actually have a routine? It’s been wonderful being back in school with our students and getting back to routine, advancing with our lessons, etc. We have just completed a vocabulary lesson and test and are moving onto Text Structure/Organization. We talked about how important structure is, considering how DNA, essays, artwork, and historical monuments relay on structure for existence.  We then related this to text structure and learned the six basic types. We’ll be reading and identifying these types, connecting it to our past concept of Author’s Purpose.
