News from 8-O

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we are covering the first presidents. We are beginning to talk about the first political parties.  Students will go on line to visit the various political party websites. They will use some online tools to investigate their own personal political views.  Soon we will travel west with Lewis & Clark using a computer simulation.  We will visit Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson on a virtual tour.  We continue to cover current events through political cartoons.  In the third marking period, students have the option of creating their own political cartoons.  Students have been introduced to several websites to create them. In the pictures, students are conducting a scramble up activity and making a cartoon strip about the French Revolution and America's reaction to it.

Math
Mrs. Lee's students will be working on Functions and Inequalities, as well as preparing for the upcoming PSSA.

Science
We are exploring oceans. We looked at the ocean floor, marine organisms, and the zones of the ocean.  We did a cool activity with Kool Aid to represent salinity of the ocean.  Next, we will be looking at currents, waves, and tides.

Academic Literacy
In Academic Literacy students are creating their works cited.  They will so begin writing their research paper, starting with a lesson on introductions and how to hook your audience.

Health
The students of Team 8-O created a recipe of DNA in a Build-A-Dog Activity to study how variations in DNA lead to the inheritance of different traits.  The students picked strips of paper, which represented DNA and used them to assemble a DNA molecule.   The students then read the DNA recipe to create a drawing of their dog and to identify what made their dog unique.

English
In Ms. Suppa’s English class, students worked in small groups to present characters, scenes, and symbols from a short story called “Abuela Invents the Zero.”  For example, Justin Berman, Ryan Eckert, and Hayley Taylor created the following Bit Strip to illustrate the story:
